Darica is a small seaside town attached to Gebze District of Izmit [Kocaeli] city, during Ottoman Empire. Its main inhabitants were Ottoman Roums [Greek Origins] along some Turkish Muslims, Ottoman Armenians. Villagers were dealing with agriculture, fisheries, marine and livestock farming. It was well know with its grapes, wines, olives, fish and construction of every kind of boats and sailboats.
Darica was named as “Darica Nahiyesi: Darica Township“& “Darica Karyesi & Karye-i Dariıca: Darica Town” during Ottoman Empire and it kept its name when Republic of Turkey was established.
From ancient times till today Darica was called, written and recorded with many different names by many different people and travelers. The below listed ones are I have found from many records, books, travel books and from the pages of State Archive of Turkish Republic;
Darıca: Antartza, Aretsou [Αρετσού], Aretzu [Αρετσού], Aricium, Ariçu, Aritchu, Aritzou [Αρετσού], Darıca Karyesi, Darıca, Darıca Nahiyesi, Darica, Daridja, Darıcah, Dariceh, Daritza [Δάριτζα], Diachidesse, Kalós Agrós [καλος Αργος: Güzel Köy, Şirin Köy], Rysion [Ρύσιον], Ritzion [Ρύσιον], Tararium, Tarjca, Tragea, Tsarion, [Ottoman Empire times Roum Town, Darica, Izmit-Kocaeli], Kocaeli-Turkey.
