Santa Barbara, Izmitli Azize – St. Barbara, Saint of Izmit City

Santa Barbara, Izmitli Azize – St. Barbara, Saint of Izmit City

Hıristiyanlığın ilk zamanları. İzmit’in adı Nikomedia. Bölge Bitinya Krallığı’nın egemenliğinde. Başkenti de Nikomedia. Kent adını Bitinya Krallığı’nın ilk kralı olan Nikomed I’den alıyor.

Azize Barbara her 4 Aralık’ta çeşitli dini ayinlerle anılmaktadır.

Santa Barbara, Izmitli Azize – St. Barbara, Saint of Izmit City

Santa Barbara and Other Christian Saints of Izmit

Dear Members,
I will tell the short stories of Christian Saints of Izmit - Kocaeli [Nicomedia] so soon. However Izmit city is so much ancient one in spite of it has not been yet well commonly known and not explored completely. I will try to add some striking ancient pictures under this page from Izmit city.

Santa Barbara Layout In The Izmit Castle

By now only I will add short story of St. Barbara' life and who was Santa Barbara of Nicomedia city during Bithynia Kingdom [todays Izmit - Kocaeli, Turkey].

St. Barbara

There is only one leg from St. Barbara's body preserved in this church. She was born in Nicomedia [Asia] probably in the year 270 A.D.. Her mother died when she was a little girl. Her father was a pagan who collaborated with Romans, when they occupied the city, and he persecuted the Christians. As a mature girl, she disagreed with life in luxury, and she didn't want to have slaves. From those facts her father discovered that she was Christian. Consistent with his animosity toward Christians, he had her beaten and arrested. As he could not turn her away from her faith, he brought his own daughter to trial. The legend says that the soldiers could not wound her, so they dragged her naked all over town. At that moment, an angel came and covered her with a white tunic. Her father was furious watching all this, so he killed her with a sword. She was only 18 years old. At that moment, as a Vatican codex says, her father was struck by lightning, and turned into ashes. In the year of 1225, her body was transported to the Rieti Cathedral in Italy and beatified by Pope Oton III. In the Middle Ages St. Barbara was named protective saint of miners, and later on to all those who had to deal with fire. St. Barbara is esteemed all over the world. Her feast day is on December.

The Castle Room Saint Barbara Held Prisoner & Santa Barbara Castle
The assumed place is located to the northern hills of Izmit city, Turkey. The castle takes places in the eastern section of Bagcesme Cemetery and it is called as Sehitlik, previously know as “Radar Tepesi” [Radar Hill]. During 2001 Istanbul Greek Orthodox Patriarchate has arranged a ritual on the date of December 4th for Azize Barbara or Greek Aya Varvara [Άγιος βαρβαρα] and known by all other places as Santa Barbara or St. Barbara.
